It's only 1Xp average less than what you wanted, and has the potential for more than what you wanted.

I mean if you could get large amounts of XP for getting mulched, everyone would be doing it.

So yeah, as a strategy for gaining large amounts of XP, it's not a great call for a trainer. As a roleplaying device, it makes sense to do it.

I understand the points you are making, Iron, and I like the Roleplaying aspect of this hypothetical training session quite a bit, but at this point its fair too much of a gamble on my part. Essentially, in order for me to get a decent amount of XP from this, not only do I have to win a fight against Staryu, but also roll really well in my training AND write a decent enough scene in order to maximize my XP gains (Which would be around 14 or less). If I lose out on one or both, Michael gets nothing at all but a very bad attitude replacing his egotism, and grudge to settle against Nathan's Pokémon, and generally being at odds with his master.

Unless I stand to gain sustainly from this, its just not worth it to go ahead with the scenario, the more I think about it. Having a set amount of XP you can get on top of whatever you win in the gamble (Either winning against Staryu or the Training Roll; pick my poison indeed) would make such a gauntlet more palatable, at the very least. I might not win big, but Michael at least is guaranteed 6 XP for his pummeling, which would at least make a dent into getting Spore if nothing else.

Normally, I don't say anything about how much XP should be granted from an engagement, since Training Roll are a hard mechanic in the game, and battles are something I go into fully knowing that I stand a better chance of winning than not. However, since I'm going to be doing nothing BUT losing, I want at least some assurance that my Shroomish and chara don't walk away with absolutely nothing.
