If he somehow wins against Staryu, then just make his next battle even more one-sided to compensate for that! I'm game for that plan! I do wonder how much XP Michael will get out of this, however. That's the elephant in the room, here. Since normally only training rolls and winning battles gains you XP, having Michael going on a losing streak seem...difficult to justify him earning anything but an attitude change (For both better and worse).

Hmmm...that actually sounds like a good idea.  Saves a lot of work, too, since the math basically says Staryu is the only pokemon Michael might even have a chance against.

As for that exp...well, it's been established that losing still grants a small amount of exp.  You still learn something, after all.

I want Michael to make some decent headway on earning Spore without having to literally grind out 3 or 4 more encounters/training seasons, so I really wish for my mushroom to get at least a decent amount of XP from being brutalized. If I have him being trampled by 6 Pokémon, getting 2 XP each would be rather decent, in my opinion, but that might be too much. Then again, Michael is literally fighting multiple battles in a row against tough as nails enemies, so maybe getting that much would make that work?

The sooner it learns Spore, the sooner he can evolve and start becoming a truly powerful member of my team!

The standard XP for a fair trainer battle is 3Xp per Pokemon, so 2 is very high for loss after loss. I'll do an automatic Canalize Training Roll for the whole session, which would be an average of 4XP total but could be as high as 7.

Also the exception to gaining XP during a loss is fainting before at least getting close to victory against at least one Pokemon.

So, 1 XP per battle (Will the possible exception of Staryu, if Michael prevails), and at least a chance for 4XP afterwards? At least, that is what I can figure, judging by what you are saying. Though, considering that Michael is deliberately being pitted against Pokémon that are WAY out of his league right now, perhaps a higher XP per battle would be justified? Ultimately, its up to you Iron, but I'm interested how things will pan out regardless of how much XP everyone gets out of this.

That makes me wonder how much XP each of Nathan's Pokémon will get, now that I think about it...

Probably not much since they'll be pummeling him into the ground.  Don't learn much if it's dirt easy, after all.

Perhaps they can learn more because mulching Shroomish also counts as teaching the basic agriculture? After all, you have to have good fertilizer if you want to raise healthy, bountiful crops!

No, the training roll would replace the battles in which he is utterly defeated. He would have a chance for real battle XP in the Staryu fight on top of that, dice willing, which would be 5XP all by itself.

That's...not to great then, Iron. Given my luck, I'm liable to get absolutely nothing out of this but an very surly Shroomish that might not want to listen to me anymore. Perhaps I shouldn't do the gauntlet then, in that case. Rather have a egotistical Pokémon and slowly grind out the XP for Spore than to have one with that is disobedient and the very real chance of gaining nothing at all, besides Roleplaying XP for it.

It's only 1Xp average less than what you wanted, and has the potential for more than what you wanted.

I mean if you could get large amounts of XP for getting mulched, everyone would be doing it.

So yeah, as a strategy for gaining large amounts of XP, it's not a great call for a trainer. As a roleplaying device, it makes sense to do it.
