The dog analogy doesn't really work, since you can have a Pokemon named Brownie for 90 levels and if you're the OT you can still change it to Fluffy if you want.

Well, I dunno... maybe I just like to see that a traded Pokemon I got has a nice nickname, or I enjoy asking the person who will trade it to nickname it for me if I come up with a name suggestion, that's probably why I somehow dislike this option and see no need in changing it.
A Pokemon with a neat nickname is an indicator that the OT appreciated that particular Pokemon. at least that's what I think, you can agree or not.
Oh, and trading a Pokemon with an offensive/inappropiate name on purpose is simply intellectually undemanding.
