Are we supposed to put the spoiler tag on shinies?

'Supposed' is the wrong word, it's more like personal taste.

That makes sense. Here I was thinking that it was because it was a major part of the game and shouldn't be shown.

I think many of the people who use the spoiler tags for images do so not because they're spoilers, but because sometimes screenshots can be rather large and can make a post hard to read, or make the thread load slowly on older computers.  But they don't really count as actual spoilers, unlike plot-centric story elements.

Sorry, but I have another question: Should I post here if I want to trade a shiny? Or should it be in the Battle and Trade section of the site?
