Fun Fact: There was one moment in the anime where something like this happened: the episode where Jessie released her Dustox since she thought the moth would be happier living in the wild with a bunch of other wild Dustox (plus a Shiny one that another trainer was releasing for the same reason)
The problem: Dustox didn't want to leave Jessie's side
Jessie's solution: crush Dustox's pokeball underfoot to show Dustox exactly how serious she was about letting Dustox go (which worked, btw)
Anime might operate on different rules, though, for obvious reasons.
