[Meta Thread] Pokerole Mystery Dungeon: Primal Shadows

Always been hesitant to enter the MH Series due to the whole 'Time to Learn' commitment, but I like the thought of a game that you can just sink your teeth into and chew for a good long time. I'll definately watch a few videos and guides now to see how it works, thanks mate!

What's your favorite part about the Monster Hunter series, beyond the music? Is it the monsters themselves, the environs, or some other quality that elludes me now?

I'd have to say my favorite part is the action when you actually start getting into the hunts and get your game really going.  Early game monster hunter can be a little bit slow as you get your gear and items together and learn about all the systems and menus, but by the time you reach the late game, you're often running hunts like a well oiled machine, and it's incredibly addictive to be taking down these massive beasts (or dragons, serpents, spiders...) one after another (sometimes literally).  Similar to Dark Souls, it feels especially rewarding to take down a particularly difficult big bad, particularly if you'd been having trouble with things previously.

But again, early game MH can feel like a massive slog, particularly for newcomers.  There's lots of menus that you need to peruse and figure out how to use, tutorials galore (or a distinct lack of them), you need to do most of your gathering by hand at first (though most of it can be automated later), and the games are far from easy.  As a whole, MH is a slower and more deliberate series than most action games, and that's the thing that most frequently tends to turn off newcomers from joining the hunt long term.  But do the busywork and put in the effort, and it's an experience like few others! (it also helps if you have a friend who plays the games and can show you the ropes)

Oh, and if you want to try jumping into the series sooner rather than later, World's not the only non-switch game with active online multiplayer.  4 Ultimate on the 3DS still sees a fair amount of activity as well.  It's a bit clunkier than the more recent MHs due to being a bit more traditional, but it's still very, very good.
