"Here comes the tricky part, where this young trainer will have to make a crucial decision! Spikes on one side, water on the other, and a Ponyta trapped between! Sealeo, it's up to you, my boy!"

Sealeo appears, sliding gracefully on the ice like a beautiful pinball. He sounds his bugling battle call!

Larry has no money to play games with really good prizes. You need at least $200. Did you sell the second Magikarp for $50?

But there's lots of smaller games, where winning is its own satisfaction, and Larry finds a few of those. Including a sort of "flight simulator" ride that you can actually program while you ride in it, for different effects and mini-plots.

But on the way, who does he see but Rachel Dean? She has a rare Pokemon on her shoulder - a Rufflet!

"Oh hey Larry. Still doing nerdy stuff like that computer programming? Well, I can't complain - my Pokedex is better than ever thanks to you. I'm on my way to challenge Zamboni, but I guess I need to win a CarnyCoin first. I think I'll use Rufflet in a few games of Shuckleball - Rufflet are notorious for their creative ways to get Shuckle out of his shell in the wild! You heading on home to Corsage Port after the festival ends?"

"oh wow nerdy really that's the best you can do? well hey no problem, oh your gonna fight the gym leader well I would fight him before you and tell you smell ya later but im broke. Well nice Rufflet, not as good as my nicada but its ok. Hey how about we both hang out for a while and play some games maybe I could win a coin for you, oh or you could beat a older girl named Shiva she has been mad at me for a while and maybe a man named Vetus to?" Larry said as he was like this in his mind

She laughs. "No offense, Larry, but I imagine I've been training my Pokemon to fight more than you have. But we apparently get these Sawsbuck tokens - think you could win me a nice Shellder pearl?"

Aww. Shiva SURELY accepts the hug and will pay them another visit, someday! Just depends in what terms, and what the purpose it will have. Because... while she didn't voice it directly (yet?), she's absolutely interested in an apprenticeship here. But this can wait after the journey through Chreshire.

After farewells are done and wrapped up, she collected Cottonee and Helios back from the pasture AND gave a last cuddle to the dear Eevee, Shiva stepped out of the Daycare. Now... Business awaits...

I have been training since day one you just had a move better than tackle that's all and one pokemon and you didn't win a second magikarp from the stand over there but I got a plain with this mess I own. oh yeah I could win you a pearl not with my own money but yeah I could, if I tried enough times" Larry said as he looked over at the pokecenter to see Nathan still fighting Zamboni

Larry heard her say she wouldn't beat Shiva in a battle "probable shouldn't have asked you since your such a nice gal. and I guess I could beat her on my own I mean she gots every type I could counter" Larry said having a thought in his head "hey since they think I'm a reckless trainer I could show them whos boss, then I wont be looked at as a kid with no idea on how to train"

'What the...a sealeo?  That's a bit difficult, no?  Ah well...guess Delibird wasn't exactly easy either...hmmm, what to do...'

Swiftfire had been cooled down, the loss of her Flame Charge's fire leaving her in the middle of the ice with nowhere to go.  "Swiftfire, I'm switching you out!  You're not out yet, though!  Come over here and take a breather!"  Swiftfire retreats, trying to catch her breath.  That Delibird had taken the wind right out of her with that Fake Out and Icy Wind.  She'd be feeling better in a moment, though she wasn't looking forward to stepping on one of those spikes...roasting that bird had been fun, though.

Nathan thinks for a moment, then chooses his next pokemon.  "Alright Ralts, it's go time!  Get on out there!"

Ralts walks onto the ice, almost stumbling over one of the spikes as it surfaces!  (dang entry hazards)  "Pay that no mind, Ralts!  Use Growl, and follow up with a Confusion when you land it!  This is a battle of endurance we're in!"  Hopefully the debuff helped ease the fight a little...it wasn't Charm, but every bit of damage reduction and power was going to be needed here.

Order:
- Turn 1: Growl first, followed by Confusion if it lands, another Growl if it doesn't
- Followed by double Confusions on following turns.  This fight needs to end quickly!
Accuracy:
- Growl: 3 Dexterity + 2 Fight - 2/3 Action
- Confusion: 3 Dexterity + 2 Fight + 1 Canalize - 2/3 Action
Damage: 2 Strength + 2 Power + 1 STAB - 3 Vit = 2 D6
Effect:

Valder happily takes his prize money while patting Theo proudly on the head. "Well done, Theo! Lets get you patched up"
 'I would like to let Ghastly have a try as well though. I wonder if there are any other trainers who'd want to battle right now'.

Meta: assuming I'm letting Theo of with nurse Joy for a bit, I'd want to give Ghastly some attention as well in the form of a battle. Don't go too hard on him though.

Zamboni vs Nathan Round 4

Zamboni just laughs. "I know you can handle it, young trainer. Win or lose, I see potential in you. I pick my team based on what I see in a challenger's eyes. There's something about that gaze. Ralts feels it. Don't you?"

Indeed, Ralts has taken the field with a look of grim determination, his immediate loss of 1 hp notwithstanding. He is learning to thrive on competition. Many Pokemon have little choice, but Ralts wants to learn to grow stronger.

(Also remember that an evolved Pokemon's advantages are mostly in HP, and sometimes in new moves they gain access to. Their BST doesn't go up - but in character, people do respect evolutions a lot more. The real threat is Canalize!)

Ralts also Traces Thick Fat, proving once again that switching Ponyta was a good choice.

"Sealeo, I see no reason to give Ralts an encore for that performance, though he does deserve a round of applause!" Sealeo doesn't understand this "joke" and Zamboni is forced to say, "Just use Water Gun, friend." *chuckle*
Zamboni isn't as clever as he thinks he is.

"Enough playing around. We need to show this new trainer that, as his first Gym Leader, we are not pushovers!"

Zamboni tosses a Pokeball into the rink. As it flies by, the rents Swiftfire made in the icy layer are repaired to sparkling new. Out bursts a squat steel shape, crackling with electricity and frost. It's an...ice machine?

The doors of the machine burst open, revealing a mischievous ghostly face. Ethereal electric arms stab out from the squat refrigerator and steady it. Zamboni is proud as all hell of what he has unleashed.
