Unlike Shiva, Nathan has no problem with doing whatever he can to prevent Ventus from going after the rat. Mostly because there's one thing in particular he'd be able to do...

Plus, he's fairly confident he could take on Ventus if it came to blows.

Remember what nearly happened to Nathan before the last time things got serious between the two? Apsis has (or will have) standing orders to defend her master more than long enough for him to quickly kill the rat before Nathan has a chance to do anything. You have to get through 13 HP of solid snake, and your best bet of doing that is currently extremely injured, to the point that ANY attack by Apsis will either KO it or put it on the threshold. And Ventus could always release another Pokémon like Lucifer to finish off the jumbo sized rat while he also occupies Nathan's attension.

Basically, unless you try to straight up knock out my character somehow AND can overcome Apsis, the Rattatta days are numbered, mate. Even then, Ventus will not leave Fireweed until he hunts it down and kills the damn thing, and who know how long that will take.

Curious to see how Shiva reacts to Nathan breaking down right in front of her. There's enough evidence there for her to put together that Kirlia isn't just a simple pokemon companion to Nathan, after all...
