Gym Leader Howl vs Nathan Round 2

Drain Punch 1
(4)(6)(1)(2)(3)(1) (4)(2)(3)
(6)(6)(3)(4)(2) Absol takes 6 dmg right off the bat. 2/8hp -2 pain. That attack was more effective than it should have been! It moves rapidly in to retaliate, knowing Dark moves are a risk, but hoping for that crit. This thing is almost as fast as Calam, and its eyes glitter with light.
"Absol is my special Ghost-killer! He's completely immune to their powers."

Slash 1
(2)(2)(4)(4)(2)(6) (6) Critical hit.
6* Str + 3 power + 2 crit + 1 STAB -4 vit = 8d6
(4)(3)(2)(1)(1)(2) (4)(5) Gallade takes just 2 dmg ^_^

Drain Punch 2
(3)(1)(4)(4)(1)(3) (3)
Absol faints.

"I like you, Nathan. You don't hold back. Once, such a one sided loss might have embarrassed me. In my later years, I'm more interested in just raising the best Pokemon that I can."

"I do have one more Pokemon that might be capable of giving you a challenge. It's interesting and rare, I'll give you that hint."

Gallade also recovers 1 HP from that Drain Punch. No more pain! Wink

"And I have a pokemon you may find interesting!  I'll probably be relying on him a lot tomorrow since we'll likely be heading to the Skull Ruins in the morning."

Out comes Nathan's own Absol, Calam!  Unless Howl has another super speedy pokemon, Calam's all but guaranteed to outspeed whatever Howl sends out.

Oh, and the faint glow of Calam's horn should be hidden because of Ray's earlier FLASH brightening the room!

"It's rare for a trainer to train an Absol. Rare that an Absol wants a trainer! And very rare for a skilled trainer to bring an Absol to a dark gym. May I introduce BLACK KEENGLAIVE!"

He tosses his Pokeball into the ring. A towering steel monstrosity, all spikes and edges, appears in the battlefield!

"This may be the only one of its kind in Creshire today! They say it has something to do with the Skull Ruins as well. Don't look into its eyes, Nathan! That's dangerous for humans to do."

Keenglaive always goes last.

The Leader's Last!: Gym Leader's Last Pokemon - Pokemon Origins

Nathan's not surprised.  I had a feeling this was going to be Howl's last pokemon.

"Maybe the only one of the Black variety, but I actually know someone with a White Keenglaive.  However, I've all but lost contact with that person in recent times, unfortunately.  Anyways...Calam is a dear, dear friend of mine, just like Gallade.  We've been in more dangerous scrapes than I'd like to count, and I don't know what we'd do without him.  With any luck, after I visit the Skull Ruins tomorrow..."

Nathan holds up the Absolite.

"...I'll be able to Mega Evolve him, and show the whole region that Absol aren't something to be feared. Well, unless you get on their bad sides, that is. And trust me, you don't want to get on Calam's bad side."

Nathan looks to his friend, then to the Gym Leader, then back to the Absol.

"I think it's time to reveal our secret weapon.  Crush them, Calam!"

ROCK SMASH 1-5
Acc: 15* - 5/6/7/8/9 = 10/9/8/7/6 D6
Dmg: 4 + 5 + QE (we already know BK is Dark/Steel from Atheneum) = 9 D6 base + 2 damage
Eff: -1 Defense (5)

The first time Calam is at -2 Pain, Nathan will say with a little flair while clutching the Mutios effigy on his necklace, "...even in the darkest times, there will always be light!  And this gym is the perfect place to show that!"

Moonlight
Acc: 7* + 6* Survival + 0 Nature = 13 base
Eff: Basic Heal (4 D6)!  Unless drawing upon the power of the many evolutionary stones in the gym could possibly make it a Complete Heal? (it would be 8 D6 in that case)
Note: Calam's moonlight wings appear in all their glory as soon as he uses this move! They're too bright to be hidden by anything but the brightest light!

If ROCK SMASH doesn't happen to be effective, then Moonblast is the backup plan (which would also reveal the moonlight wings, which would also be preceded by Nathan's mid-Round callout).

(Just got finished with my biggest batches of work yet, so I have a bit of time to make a post! When this all over, I need to get some sleep.....)

From Terra's end, I imagine that Terra politely requests/suggests that Nathan reschedule their battle until later/after they confirm with them to fully prepare, and then let's them go do just that and whatever other business they need to get done in the meantime. Can't have a proper good Brawl if you weren't ready for it, especially with this one they planned!

If they would mention they were challenging Howl, then the sagely monk would have been more than happy to tag along and watch their fight, if it was okay with them! He doesn't have to come, but he still wants to offer his show of support none the less! Plus, it be a good opportunity to fairly see how Howl fights/some of his selection of Pokemon, and yet another instance for him to measure Nathan's battling/strategist ability! In that case, he'd be silently cheering them on with Poesi and Dunny hovering by his side providing a more overt and jubilant support (Well, sister and creepy in Dunny's case -  he's mainly out for 'Sensitivity' Training against Dark types). He's mostly casual, chill, and confidant about his friend's performance, but when the literally shady man sends out Black Keensglave comes out he immediately straightens up and starts paying serious attention. That Dark Knight..... something about it puts him on edge, like some fell, dominating aura that demands his respect and wariness.

Of course, being the curious sort that he is, though, Terra would also try to get a good look at B.K.'s eyes. Warning or not (If he heard it), he wants to know what the big deal with them was, and given he was an especially tough man, he could take the consequences of said action.....maybe.

If Nathan wouldn't want him to come, though, then spend his time at the Pokemon Center and then shopping around for....reasons, then he'll meet up with Howl for business, which will be revealed when need be. Those events will take place regardless at some point in the day regardless, only after Nathan's Gym Battle.

(Won't affect my decisions/course of action, but would watching Nathan's battle count as an Encounter for Terra, or not? Just curious)

It'd be okay with Nathan if Terra wanted to come and watch his battle with Howl.

Gallade would probably be frowning worriedly at Terra if he decides to look directly at BK though.  Nathan's focused on the battle right now, not the few spectators.

Quote:Lurantis wasn't planning to come, but when she learned you had something important to ask, she swings down from the trees and checks out your hatchlings. "It is good that you keep your pledges. What did you need to ask, mortal?"

Being called 'mortal' hurts Shiva just a tiny tiny bit because it has a weird ring despite it's only true.

Either way, she's happy that Primal Lurantis decided to show Herself and greets Her with the mentioned deep bow. "I thank thee for granting me a few minutes of Your precious time. Now, allow me to ask a question to you - " She waves to Ophelia and Fuchsia. "Yes, these precious ones have hatched and are healthy and well. And yes, the way things are looking now, me and the group will start traveling downwards the ominous and infamous ruins for the artficast by tomorrow morning... Please, allow me to leave this gentle unicorn and graceful flower fairy in your care and guard for that time being. It is too dangerous to bring them along, but I'm not feeling comfortable with just placing them in a box of Bill's PC. Do You understand, noble guardian of this grove? I will return and pick them up again as soon as...the threat from space is dealt with, as soon as things are safe again and I've become the hero I yearn to be; and as soon as these young ones are mature and old enough, I will bring them back again to enjoy their life here..."

Shiva also asks whether the Minicorn and Flabebe are fine with that, she at least believes so. "This is the best option for you, my dear ones, and I'm positive you'll enjoy your stay here. Please fret not, as I promise to return.... This is not farewell. By FAR not yet." HOWEVER, if there's a threat that Happiness or Loyalty are affected negatively, we'll abstain from this idea.

Gym Leader Howl vs Nathan Round 3

While the combatants are getting ready, Terra challenges himself to meet Keenglaive's eyes willingly. Immediately, your will is not your own. (not enough Insight to resist)

You feel commanded to leap over the barrier and interpose yourself between attacks targeting Keenglaive.

Rock Smash 1
(5)(1)(4)(2)(1)(5) (6)(1)(5)(1) Just short of a critical.
(6)(4)(2)(1) Keenglaive takes 4 dmg 2/6hp -1 pain.

"Keenglaive, the only option is to use the power of your hypnotic gaze! "

Obedience: (3)(3)(4)(4) v (3)(6)(4)(4)(4)

Keenglaive refuses to use Hypnosis, and instead reaches out toward Terra. Terra instinctively raises his own hand to mirror the gesture, but Keenglaive doesn't move.

"NATHAN, STAND DOWN!" orders Howl. "KEENGLAIVE-"

Calam skids to a halt inches away from Keenglaive... who has swapped places with Terra. Gallade also enters the battlefield, prepared to haul Terra out of the way, and three Mightyena have also leapt over the barrier to assist as needed.

Parting Shot/Ally Switch 1
(1)(1)(5)(2)(1)(5) (2)(4)

Howl recalls Keenglaive into a Dusk Ball that wriggles alarmingly. He rounds on Terra. "What manner of fool are you? Did I not warn it was dangerous to look into Keenglaive's eyes? Do you think Pokemon are toys? A Gym Battle is an extremely serious event. If Nathan hadn't already proven himself the victor, I'd have you thrown out. You won't be observing any more battles in my Gym, and if you want to challenge me you'll need to prove you've learned your lesson first."

He collects himself a little.

"Now. Let's make of this a learning experience. Keenglaive is the lord of the chessboard. His dark mind works on a level of strategy surpassing most humans, and he doesn't hesitate to think outside the box when attempting to win a battle in which he's outmatched. That's why my apprentices and I always keep a lot of Pokemon on hand to deal with any fallout where Keenglaive is involved. Like a Vespiquen or the dreaded Seikamater, he has a measure of control over those he considers underlings. What you experienced, Terra, was called Castling, where the king decides to swap positions with a defender to increase his own defense, or ruin the offense of the foe. These abilities make Keenglaive very dangerous, and so I don't blame you for falling victim to his gaze. I do, however, blame you for not heeding my warning. I hope this teaches you that brawn is not always enough to meet a challenge, and I hope you forgive me for my stern words."

"Nathan, in the Skull Ruins you will find many kingly traps. Tanuki, Dagny, and myself are the only gym leaders who dare venture there, and we always come prepared and wary no matter how confident we may feel. Rock Smash will help you.
Here is your badge and winnings. I'm sorry our battle was cut short, but I was going to need to forfeit soon anyway. I try not to let Keenglaive get cornered. He's not too dangerous until he obtains allies..."

The battle is worth 20XP, $1500, and a Brandy! (Lemonade). And you earn the Hornblende badge! Congratulations!

Observing a gym battle does not count as an Encounter. I'm going to give Terra 2XP for learning something, though.

They'd definitely prefer to stay in the Grove than the PC.

Heart gather himself and then look to Spira. "A very nice choice of Pokemon. Unfortanely Sucker Punch its not exatcly the most wise choice of action against Honckrow. He is Dark/Flying. And my Pokemon and I have trained a lot to have a more studier body, but capable of have a more highter speed. Honedege might be have weakness to Dark-types, but thanks to Iron Defense, even the most strong Dark/Ghost attack can hardy harm him."

"But this battle have only begun. Both of my Pokemon will stay in the battlefield. Lets see how you can beat this strong line of defense and power."
