[Game Thread] Pokerole: Mount Coronet Mystery

Karen vs Candice Round 8

"I can sense your will to win, but I promise you I'm not about to lose!"

Magneton can't possibly outspeed Abomasnow, but we'll roll Initiative for it anyways.
(1) + 5 = 6

Abomasnow was ready for this!  This is the primary reason Candice chose to use the abominable pokemon over one of her other aces!

Focus Blast 1
12 - 3 - 2 - 2 = 6 D6
(6)(6)(6)(6)(2) Almost a critical hit, but not quite!
5 Pow + 3 Spe - 2 Sp Def + SE =  6 D6 + 1 damage
(5)(1)(1)(1)(3)(3) Magneton, being the champ that it is, though, takes only 1 damage from the extremely powerful attack. 7/9 HP -1 Pain
(2)

More light!  More Confusion!  More Steel!

Mirror Shot 1
(4)(4)(1)
Abomasnow has 4 Sp Def
(4)(4) Abomasnow takes 3 damage! 3/12 HP -2 Pain
(6)(5)(2) Abomasnow became Confused! -2 Accuracy!

Abomasnow isn't out of tricks yet, though!  She flash melts some snow and tosses it at the trio of magnet pokemon!

Water Pulse 2
(4)(5)(4)(5) Narrowly avoided a critical hit thanks to that Confusion!
3 + 2 - 2 = 3 D6
(5)(2)(3) Magenton takes 1 damage again 6/9 HP -1 Pain
(5)(2)(2) Nope

Magneton fire another beam of energy, still having a grand ol' time!

Signal Beam 2
(6)(4)(1)
(1)(2) Abomasnow takes 1 damage 2/12 HP -2 Pain
(-)

One last, desperate attack from Abomasnow is thrown into the air to try and overcome this powerful Steel type!

Avalanche 3
12 - 2 - 6 - 2 = 2 D6
(3)(4) It hits!
(5)(3)(3)(5)(2) Magenton takes only 1 damage again 5/9 HP -1 Pain

Magneton almost carelessly launches a few magnetic explosives in Abomasnow's direction in response.  It's having a blast beating up these Ice/Grass types.

Magnet Bomb 3
(3) Hits anyways, treated as 1 success.
(4)(5) Abomasnow takes 3 damage and faints!

Gym Leader Candice has been defeated!

"I must say, I'm warmed up to you! I might even admire you a little.  You're great! You've earned my respect! I think your focus and will bowled us over totally. Oh, that's right! I'm supposed to give you this!"

Candice slides on over to Karen's side of the battlefield and holds out a hand.  A badge rests in her open palm.

Karen otained the Icicle Badge!

"Oh, and take this, too."

Karen also obtains TM 72 Avalanche and $8000.

"TM72 contains the move Avalanche. If the user takes damage, the move's power is doubled! Can you imagine what sort of focus you'd need to pull it off?  Not many pokemon can learn the move, so if you do get one, make sure to teach it to them, alright?  I think Nidoqueen can maybe learn how to use it with that TM should you find a Moon Stone for your Nidorina."

"So, was there anything else you needed from me while you're here, Karen? Oh, and don't think I've forgotten about those Prints! I definitely still want to hear aaallll about how you got those!"

This encounter was worth 28 exp total, so Karen gets 14. Magneton, Rapidash, Lopunny, and Nidorina all gain 7 exp each.

We'll flashback to Karen talking with Candice if necessary.

On to encounter 2 out of 3 for the day!

The encounter list is the same for the most part.

Except there's one change.

A purple, cat/bat-like pokemon wearing what appears to be a monocle(?) has wandered into the city from the direction of Acuity Lakefront...and it looks like it's looking for something/someone...

As a refresher, here's the general encounter list:

Ran's default course of action (Search the local Hospitals for Neuro Sensors, then do a price check for 2X of the material he thinks he needs to make the Robo Prosthetic, and lastly find a Computer Specialist at one of those Tech Cafes) for his 2nd Encounter is still the same, as while the Monocled Ca-bat is intriguing/somewhat baffling, he's a man on a mission and is not about to be distracted! However, he won't stop Kogeki from running off after it to investigate if they want, (He did offer/suggest they check out Lake Acuity in the first place while he hit the Gym, before they decided to just continuing searching for parts together) and he'll just opt to continuing do his default course of action by his lonesome. Partly because of his aforementioned determined nature, and partly because OOC I don't want to delay my chara.'s 2nd Encounter by waiting on Spiritmon to return and react to the set of events, and so I'll make Ran's Encounter not at al contingent on the ninja's presence.

However, if you needed to do Rolls for Kogeki if he were to continue searching for arm parts with Ran, then I'll just have the bristly blacksmith to decide to cut off the search for now and go challenge the Gym ASAP and leave the cat thing to them, since they/Spirit pretty much said that were not interested in taking on the Gym today and instead wanted to investigate Lake Acuity at some point. There, covered all the bases, so let the Encounter proceed onwards!

Randolph heads to the Snowpoint City Gym.  Whether he encounters Karen on his way out, I'll leave to you guys to decide. (Suggestion: It'd be a convenient way for Karen to find out about the strange pokemon as well if she wanted to investigate it.)

What matters right now is that Randolph is also challenging the gym!

The gym guide looks a little confused to see Randolph when the blacksmith enters the icy gym.

"...wait a second, don't I know you from somewhere...?  Oh yeah, you're Randolph, from Canalave City, right? I remember ya from Byron's Gym.  Whatcha doin' here?  Thought you weren't doin' the gym challenge."

Man, this guy really gets around, doesn't he?

I say that old Wolfe does bump into her on the way into Candace's Gym, and I'd also say he'd be keen enough to pick up that she won against the Gym Leader in question, earning her a raised eyebrow of surprise from him until he grunts and nods to her.

"So ya beat Miss Jackie Frost, eh? Well, congratulation, lass. Didn't think you had it in ya, but I suppose you're got some real metal hidden in ya after all. *Quietly Mumbles* Maybe Old Fashion wasn't totally off his rocker, calling in this wee girl for this barmy job..... (I'll leave it to you if she would hear this part) *Shakes head* Anyway, I got business with that candy lass herself, so I'll be heading in to chew it out with her. If ya looking for something else to occupy yourself with, I spotted this.....weird looking cat bat critter arriving from Lake Acuity. *Half shrugs* Left Kogeki to investigate it or not while I handle the Gym, but if ya want to check it out yourself too, knock yourself out."

That bluntly and concisely said, Ran moves past Karen and enters the Gym. He lets out grunting hiss of displeasure as the super cold winter wonderland that the gelid gal set up, rubbing his hands together and taking out his flask of cocoa to down a cup in order to fortify himself from the cold, before continuing his march.

"Mit Hammer und Amboss weiß ich nicht, wie man mit dieser Kälte umgehen kann und wie es sich anfühlt, als wäre es nur eine warme Sommerbrise! Ich schwöre, entweder sind die Leute hier selbst Teil des Eistyps, oder das Wetter hat ihren Sinn ebenso eingefroren wie ihren gesunden Menschenverstand. Bah!"

When the Gym Attendate speaks up and questions his purpose of entering these frosted hall, the midget man immediately turned to give the man the most withering, dispassionate, and irritated glare imaginable!

"And I thought I told ya to mind ya own damn business and keep your nose out of me affairs, or I'd dig ya out of them with my pickaxe. *Eyes gleam* Or have ya forgotten the nice little chat we had about that. If you have, I wouldn't mind one bit reminding you of. Every. Single. Detail.With. Greater. Detail. Well?"

Well?

While it is still rather chilled in the gym, it's actually a bit warmer in there than it is outside, thankfully.

Intimidation Check: 3 Tough + 0 Contest + 0 Intimidate: (5)(5)(1) 2 successes.  Well, it does the job sufficiently, at least.

The gym guide raises his hands and backs up.

"...whoa, hey there, no need to be so feisty now, Randolph."  He nervously looks in the direction of the gym leader and gets her attention.  "...hey, uh...I think ya might have some more company, Candice..."  Just from having had a chance to see some of what Randolph does in the Canalave Gym on occasion, the gym guide at least knows that Randolph probably isn't here to battle anyone and wants to talk directly to the gym leader.

Despite how worried the gym guide looks, Candice's response is still rather peppy sounding.  "Oh, another visitor who wants to see Candice already?  Well then, today's certainly shaping up to be busy.  Send 'em on over!"

The battlefield is currently still unhidden, so the gym's floor looks completely flat.  Randolph can easily tell that some of the ice has been melted, as there are long trails of water on the battlefield.  Randolph knows that it can take a bit of time to repair battlefields in Pokemon Gyms, so most of that work is typically done overnight, when the gyms aren't as busy.  Many gyms have large, open spaces dedicated for the larger scale battles with the Gym Leaders (such as the Canalave and Oreburgh Gyms), but some (such as Snowpoint's) have mechanisms that cover existing spaces to make up the battlefield, saving on space in the gym.

Athletics: (6)(1)(3)(5) Randolph isn't a graceful skater, but he isn't a klutz, either!  He makes it across the icy battlefield just fine.

Randolph's probably heard about Candice in passing before on his previous (and brief) visits to the city on his way to the Battle Zone.  Given she's in her mid to late 20s and is referring to herself in the third person and is wearing a rather short skirt (she has a sweater, but it's tied around her waist at the moment), Randolph probably thinks she's a bit silly for her age, I imagine.

Candice has no problems with giving this new visitor a peppy sounding greeting.

"Hiya!  Welcome to the Snowpoint City Gym!  What can Candice do for you?"

The bristly miner eyes the guide for a few seconds longer, before giving a curt nod to them.

"Good. Hopefully I won't be needing to remind you anytime soon, right? *Nods again* Right. I'll say this again to ya, though, just to make sure it sticks like a tongue on a chilled flag pole: mind your own damn business."

The moment he hear's the Leader's characteristic response, he has to bite back a groan and the urge to press a face against his face as he realized exactly the sort of person he was going to be dealing with soon.

'Gottverdammt, Miss Jackie Frost is one of those types. Too much cheer, not enough damn reasoning in them. Heard she was spiritely for an Ice Trainer, but this is most asuredly NOT a nICE surprise. Bah....!'

Needless to say, Randolph's first impression of Candice was nowhere near as positive as the girl herself. Silly nothing, he think's she completely daft in the head, beyond her grasp on Pokemon battling!

What he was impressed with was the damage done to the arena, his critical eyes sweeping across the entirety of it and figuring out everything he could about it in a matter of moments.

'Huh.....Karen's Rapidash must of blazed one heck of a trail in their battle with Miss Jackie. Have to beware of that, if I have to fight the Ice queen herself.....'

It should be noted/brought up again that Randolph has spiked boots, and ergo would after testing the ice to make sure he don't slip with what he'll do next (or prepare himself for that), he'd stomp straight down and across such frosted over flooring with enough force to prevent himself from slipping and sliding. However, I can see him not doing such at first in order to not ruin his first impression with her, so slipping and sliding he goes anyway!

He approaches Candice with his own characteristically stern and no-nonsense demeanor, but her subsequent greeting nearly caused him to snark back with 'Speak like you finished primary school and are not five years old,' and instead let out a small but potent *sigh* (resisting the urge to pinch the bridge of his nose) and instead said as politely, formally, and respectfully as he could:

"Greetings, mam. Name's Randolph Schimdt. I need permission to enter Snowpoint Temple. Have an investigation I'm conducting, and I think their might be some clues in there that'll help me piece things together smoother than the ice that paves this Gym of yours."

Simple, and straight to the point.

Candice looks quizzically at the stout man in front of her, and she puts a hand on her hip as she leans to the side slightly.

"Snowpoint Temple?  What exactly are you investigating that the temple might have information on?  Candice can't just let anyone skate on in there, ya know.  That place is sacred, not to mention beyond dangerous.  Some of the most powerful wild pokemon in the region live there, you know."

Despite the 'cutesy' referring to herself in the third person, Candice has a rather serious look on her face.  This topic is clearly a rather big deal. It's a stark contrast to Randolph's initial impressions of her.

Seeing Miss Jackie Frost suddenly gain a notable amount of Steel in her (oh, the irony!), Ran is forced to ameliorate his view of her. Apparently she wasn't totally daft in the head, if she understands and respects the importance (not to mention the dangers) of such an historical site. Normally he'd disliked that, since it made doing his job even harder, but in fact it brings him no small amount of relief instead, since he was not dealing with a complete fool after all!

The bristly miner mulls over as to how he would answer her, until he just settled on being a candid and frank as he possibly could. If Rowan got on his case for it, he'd tell them to either go suck on an icicle or fire him if the operational security of the job was a big enough deal to keep from the local Gym Leader, one of the defacto heads of a given community and major representative of The League, in the dark about his job.

"Have ya heard about what's been happening with Mt. Coronet? If not, here's the deal. [Insert Explanation] .....So Professor Rowan hired me and a couple of others to go investigate that twisted mess of a mystery, and see what we can find out. Or better yet, if we can't find a way to fix the dang screwy problem without losing ourselves in the depths of the mountain. Part of this mystery involves these murals that have been popping up here and in other regions, and I'm wondering if Snowpoint Temple might have one of them itself or something else connected to this budding disaster. Place is practically the Sinjoh Ruin of our region, so if anything is so blatantly whipping up a terrible Hail Storm for our fair homeland, I'd bet my bottom Poke that it'll be equally affecting the temple in some way."

*Huffs, takes a breath, and continues, looking Candice straight in the eyes with a frank, serious, concern*

"That's why I need access to Snowpoint Temple. So, will ya give it to me, mam?"

Will she?

Candice frowns and drops her cutesy act entirely.  If there's one thing she takes seriously besides Pokemon Battles, it's her job.

"...no, I haven't heard about what's happening at Mt. Coronet recently.  Tell me the details."

She listens veeeeerrrrryyyy carefully to what Randolph has to say and takes a minute to think about her response.

She only says one thing in response.

"...fight me and my pokemon first.  If you can't beat me in a Gym Battle, I won't be able to let you go in there in good conscience.  Even if Professor Rowan has faith in your abilities, I need to see it for myself before I can give you access to the Temple."

You heard the woman!  Does Randolph accept the challenge?
