Conditional Ball
This new variety of Pokeball will be useful in setting traps, containing powerful Pokemon, catching uncommon species, and expanding the relationship between people, Pokemon, and Pokemon freedom.
Using the attached technical documentation, a user can program a Conditional Ball to release or recapture the Pokemon it contains when certain criteria are met.
For example, a Voltorb could be released whenever a wild Pokemon enters the Ball's detection radius (about 100'), then automatically recaptured when the wild Pokemon is defeated.
Or a Bike could be released when a paying customer speaks the correct password.
Or a Pidgey could be released (and de-chipped) on the count of three for trainers to capture as sport.
Or your pet Meowth could be free to roam your house from dawn to dusk, and withdrawn as soon as the sun sets. Just make sure she can't leave the 100' detection radius!
There's an alternate use for a Conditional Ball. If you study a wild specimen long enough to understand it (5 Rounds), you can alter the program to increase the chances of the Ball capturing that specimen. An Almanac, or Almanac plugin for Pokedex, is necessary.
(Spending 5 Rounds studying a wild Pokemon, then you can use Knowledge+Computer Science to determine Seal Strength on any future Conditional Balls for that specimen.)
There are twenty sample Conditional Balls.
About what size are the Conditional Balls? And are there any pokemon in any of them? Gallade and Calam are instructed to stay Alert in case anything decides to try and surprise them.
Standard Pokeball size. Only one contains a Pokemon - a Mr. Mime.

Would a standard pokeball sized object fit in that hole at the bottom of the pillar?

Before Shiva and Spira have time to investigate anything, the gauntlets begin firing different energy beams!
One of each will target each of you.
Fire 1 & 2
(1)(2)(2)(2)(4)(4) (3)
Evasion: (4)(4)(5)(6)(3)(4) (1) Shiva easily dodges.
(5)(5)(6)(6)(6)(3) Critical hit on Spira though.
(6)(5)(6) Spira takes 3 dmg
CD: (4)
Electric 1 & 2
(1)(5)(3)(1)(2)(4) (2)
Evasion: (3)(4)(6)(2)(1)(1) (6)(2)(1)(2)(4)(1) Spira barely dodges. All his hair stands on end.
(4)(3)(5)(2)(1)(3)
(5)(5) Shiva takes 2 dmg
CD: (1)
Pyschic 1 & 2
(5)(4)(6)(2)(6)(1) (5) Critical hit!
(4)(3)(3)(3) Shiva takes 1 dmg
CD: (2)
(5)(6)(6)(1)(6)(2)
(3) No damage for Spira.
CD: (4)
Ice 1 & 2
(4)(2)(1)(5)(6)(6) (1)
(6) Spira takes 1 dmg
CD: (6) Spira was frozen solid!
(1)(1)(5)(1)(1)(4) Conversely, Shiva isn't even struck by the attack.
Dragon 1 & 2

(6)(5) Shiva takes 2 dmg
CD: (5)
(5)(2)(3)(1)(5)(5)
(1) No damage for Spira inside the ice block
CD: (3)
Oof! This room wasn't so safe after all. The pistons rotate and begin charging for another attack! Spira is too frozen to release any Pokeballs.

Ah. Pokeballs are about 3", so they can go right inside the 5" hole, but it's not a tight fit.

Hmmmm...and is it possible to tell if there's anything already in the hole? Nathan still has some portable light sources on hand from the Mt. Sentry adventure.

((So that's what the gauntlets do, I'm guessing the CD's are Burn, Paralysis, possibly confusion, Freeze, and possibly f flinch))
With that ice, as he's solidifying his eyes go wide.
Mechanics: At the end of this round, if no other action is taken to thaw him out, Spira will attempt to break free of the ice.

You shine your light down the hole and you see it ends in a few smaller depressions. There's nothing in there.

So, the logical conclusion is that something needs to be inserted into the hole to deactivate the force field. And it has to be a snug fit, so it's not one of the Pokeballs on the desk.
The fact that only one of them contains a pokemon, though, and that pokemon just so happens to be the Barrier pokemon...
...it probably isn't a coincidence.
Nathan turns to Heart (@ Spiritmon). "Get your Ghosts ready, just in case. I'll have Grid's pokeball ready on my end. Gallade, hang back for now. Calam, be ready to act. However this barrier is disabled, it probably has something to do with the Mr. Mime. It could be something to do with Mr. Mime's abilities, or it might be holding an item."

"Understood Warren." Heart then bring both Honedge and Viktor. "Guys, get some preparation before we enter. Viktor, Ingrain. Honedge, Swords Dance and Iron Defense. That way we will be ready for whatever is there."
Quick buff before possible battle @ Iron
